What is AMJLS?

AMJLS is Japan's biggest academic society dedicated to the study of modern Japanese literary. It was founded in January, 1953 in the name of "Association for Modern Japanese Literary Studies(AMJLS)". As of September 2017, we have approximately 1600 members including academic researchers of modern Japanese literary studies and of related organizations.

Our goal is to promote modern Japanese literary studies. We organize two conferences in May and October, and two annual meetings in June and November to provide opportunities for members to present their research results and to encourage vigorous debates. As for a place to put out the research papers, we also publish academic journal, "Nihon-Kindai-Bungaku (Modern Japanese Literary Studies)" two editions a year.

We have 8 branch offices in Hokkaido, Aomori, Tohoku, Niigata, Hokuriku, Tokai, Kansai, Kyushu which have been committed to the further development of modern Japanese literary studies. We also facilitate communication and interactions among the international research team or organization of modern Japanese literary studies.

AMJLS is an official academic research partner organization of Science Council of Japan.
